Kurilpa Derby and Beggars Banquet, Sunday 4 September, 1pm - 10pm
Mark your diaries because Kurilpa Derby is gearing up to return to Boundary St now in it's 13th year as West End's favourite day affectionately dubbed, West End on Wheels.
Folks, it's time to start getting your floats and costumes constructed and designed for the procession, prizes and wacky races. Plus bring on the bike bling and other suitably weird and wonderfully wheely contraptions. Nothing like two thousand people rolling, racing, wheeling, walking down the long stretch of Boundary St to join in for a family free for all community celebration. Participate in a relay or race or just strut your stuff, it's your day to bring to life! We take to the streets for the entire afternoon into night.
Then once the sun goes down, the largest community feast takes over Boundary St. Beggars Banquet will be calling for "hosts" to dress and feed a table of 6-8 guests and beggars on the day. Email your interest to: westendfestival4101@gmail.com
Program Outline
1pm - 5pm: Russell St stalls and activities
1pm - 10pm: Ex Rumpus room stage presents Theremin experience plus badclowns and guest artists
1.30pm: assemble for the parade under the Dornoch Terrace bridge
2pm - 2.30pm: parade
3pm - 5pm: novelty races, comps and demos, West End Dance, Whoopee Do Crew, Dance Halls at Ahepa House
6pm - 9pm: Beggars Banquet, featuring live music and roving performances such as Blue Tac, Pandora's Karavan, Niko Martin and Accomplice Collective

Qu: What is Kurilpa Derby?
A: Kurilpa Derby will run between 3pm - 5pm. We will start with a parade, with punters gathering at 1.30pm under the Dornoch Terrace Bridge. Once the streets are free of traffic, you'll be able to get on your wheely contraption, bike, scooter, or any wheely gadget you desire. We encourage you to walk, wheel and roll down Boundary Street into the Boundary St road closure area between Vulture St and Jane St for wacky and novelty races and relays between the start line at Vulture St down Boundary St near The Lizard which is marked by a giant metal truss right over Boundary Street marking the finish line. Anyone can join in!
Qu: What happens once the Parade is finished?
A: You can join in the races, enter into competitions and win a prize for ‘best float’ or ‘Best Costume’. Or, if you're wanting to explore, go check out the Kurilpa Info Hub on Russell Street which will feature a mix of community group stalls and talks. Next to The Burrow (ex-Rumpus Room carpark) there'll be live music and LOTS of clowns until late and you can take part in games, sports and recreational activities.
Qu: Is the Event ‘All Ages’?
A: Absolutely! And in the spirit of fun and inclusivity, we encourage people to bring their family, it's free and everyone is welcome! The little kids can get crafty with the Big Issue colouring-in competition or the adults can boogie to the bands later. Ray White is offering face painting for the kids, so be sure to say Hello.
Qu: How do I Bling my Bike and Stay Safe?
A: We recommend you wear a helmet, knee and wrist pads if applicable to your wheelie gadget. If you have a little one, feel free to add fairy wings, face paint, and other colourful add-ons. Check out this vid of the parade for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwyNkrWXoFQ
Our races are themed so little kids aren't racing against big kids. These races are designed to be fun and the first across the line isn't necessarily the winner! After all, it's a good laugh and free entertainment!
We recommend once you finish racing to take your bike down to Jane St / Russell St and leave it there so it's not a trip hazard! For safe racing, we recommend people not pushing each other because accidents happen, and we want to minimise them.
There will be two qualified paramedics providing First Aid and water and sunscreen at the Kiosk site (People's Park) during the event.
Qu: Is the Event Free?
A: Yes, the event is 100% free and you can stay as little or as long as you like. It is hosted by West End Community Association who secure grant funding and sponsorships, without local business support this event would not be possible. Costs have gone up 30% thanks to COVID so if you’d like to donate to contribute to event costs by showing your support, we’d love this so much! We also have an awesome bunch of raffles so head to the Kiosk Info Hub (People’s Park) to check them out! Raffles will be drawn during the Beggars Banquet.
Qu: What is the Beggars Banquet?
A: Beggars Banquet is a community feast where ‘Hosts’ register to feed a table of 8 a specifically themed meal. Hosts supply all the food plus table decorations, table clothes, solar lights (optional) and crockery / cutlery. Hosts arrive at 5pm to set up their table by 6pm and the banquet runs for 3 hours. Hosts register their tables by completing a simple application form. We aim to source tables and chairs to cover this component but it’s great when Hosts can BYO table and camping chairs!
Event attendees can also register as a “Beggar” which encourages the community to meet each other and so we get to know our neighbours. It’s great to meet someone new, put yourself out there and enjoy a great feed from a local resident. Our event MC loves to come and chat to Banqueteers so stay tuned!
TIP: Good table manners from a 'Beggar' is encouraged by helping the ‘host' clean and pack up! Don’t forget to thank them for their efforts and yummy food.
