About West End Community Association (WECA)

The West End Community Association (WECA) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit, incorporated association represented by a 100% volunteer-led and managed board. We engage with our community of 35,000 + people which includes: residents, local business, organisations and government within Kurilpa (West End, Highgate Hill, Hill End, West of Montague Road, South Brisbane) in Brisbane / Meanjin.

Since forming in 2004, we have celebrated and promoted our values and the people that make Kurilpa a vibrant and diverse community through project-to-project based work.

Our Vision

We strive to be a connected, liveable and diverse urban community within the Kurilpa peninsula. Our work centres on advocacy, rights and representation, liveability, environment and sustainability initiatives, people, place and cultural projects, the arts and celebratory events.

Arts and Culture

We bring community together for arts and cultural events, activities and projects. Examples include: Kurilpa Derby, the Kurilpa Beggars Banquet, West End Festival, West End Block and Micro Block Parties, West End Film Festival and our First Nations led project Breaking Boundaries.

Representation

We collect and amplify community voices on the issues that impact our community. Examples include: Local, state and Federal candidates forums and keeping our community informed about local issues, events, and initiatives through Facebook, Instagram and regular e-newsletters to our membership.

Sustainability

We strengthen our urban community through projects and initiatives that improve safety, sustainability and liveability: Examples include: Resilience Kurilpa, 4101 Families forum and advocacy on sustainable development and access to public spaces.

People

We grow the capability and capacity of our community including our members and volunteers. Examples include: participating in WECA subcommittees, volunteering at our events, student placements and training.
